Do you blow twice to check for H. pylori?

The H. pylori breath test involves blowing twice. The H. pylori breath test procedure usually involves exhaling and collecting the gas once before the test is performed, then having the patient swallow a urea capsule containing carbon 13 labeling and sit still for 30 minutes before blowing and collecting the gas a second time.

The H. pylori breath test is the preferred method of screening for H. pylori and is commonly performed with carbon 13 and carbon 14. The test is not dependent on endoscopy and is widely used in hospitals for its good patient compliance and accuracy.

Before the test, it is necessary to pay attention to keep fasting for more than 2 hours and avoid strenuous exercise during the test; patients usually need to stop using antibiotics such as amoxicillin for at least 4 weeks before the test, and the stopping and using of all kinds of medicines before the test should be adjusted according to the doctor’s advice.

Once Helicobacter pylori is detected, it is recommended that treatment be carried out in a timely manner under the guidance of a doctor to avoid triggering diseases such as gastritis, gastric ulcer and even gastric cancer.
