What to do if the stone is stuck in the ureter and can’t be removed?

If the stone is stuck in the ureter and cannot be discharged, it is considered to be ureteral stone, and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy or laparoscopic ureterotomy can be performed to remove the stone.
1. Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) can be considered for ureteral stones that have become embedded. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is to locate the stone by X-ray or ultrasound, and then use high-energy shock wave to act on the stone, making it cracked or crushed, and then discharged out of the body with urine.
2. Ureteroscopic lithotripsy is a procedure in which a ureteroscope is inserted through the urethra and guided by a safe guidewire into the ureter, where ultrasound and laser are used to break up the stone and then remove it.
3. Laparoscopic ureterotomy is suitable for ureteral stones larger than 2cm in diameter, and is also suitable for patients who have failed ureteroscopic surgery or extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.
