Cervical softening is a sensory process that is required during postmenopausal IUD removal, medication abortion, hysteroscopy, and abortion, as it can help the procedure go smoothly. As the softening of the cervix will cause congestion of blood in the cervix, some women will feel discomfort such as falling and pain in the abdomen, and when the cervix is congested, the cervical glands will show an increase in secretion, and some women will experience vaginal bleeding. Cervical softening is achieved by using oxytocin or cargometrine intravenously to induce regular uterine contractions, one contraction in 5-6 minutes, and one contraction lasting longer than 30 seconds. Physical methods can also be used to soften the cervix by applying a small air bag to mechanically dilate the cervix, depending on the woman’s condition.
