Why Splenectomy Causes Hypoglycemia

Splenectomy generally does not cause hypoglycemia, and there is little connection between the two. If patients have hypoglycemia symptoms after splenectomy, it is generally considered as insufficient nutritional intake after surgery and patients’ own diseases.
1. Insufficient postoperative nutritional intake: after splenectomy, blood glucose is generally not affected. Blood sugar is controlled by insulin and glucagon secreted by pancreatic islet b-cells, and spleen is an immune organ, so there is not much correlation between hypoglycemia and splenectomy.
If there are hypoglycemia symptoms after splenectomy, it is generally considered that the nutrition and sugar intake is too low after surgery, which leads to hypoglycemia. It is suggested that patients should actively supplement nutrition and energy after surgery, which can alleviate and improve the symptoms of hypoglycemia.
2. The patient’s own disease: patients with hypoglycemia symptoms, need to consider whether they are suffering from diabetes, if they are diabetic patients, postoperative hypoglycemia is more common. If not, it may be related to patients’ irregular life and side effects of medication for lowering blood sugar.
Therefore, if the patient has hypoglycemia after splenectomy, it is more likely to be due to postoperative malnutrition and insufficient sugar supplementation. If there is any discomfort, please seek medical help promptly.
