What antibiotics are used for surgical prophylaxis

Prophylactic antibiotics for surgical procedures are usually applied differently depending on the site of the procedure or the type of incision. In the case of class I incisions, such as thyroid, breast, or hernia, or saphenous varicose vein, the most common type of infection is Staphylococcus aureus due to the surface surgery, so prophylactic antibiotics are usually chosen from the cephalosporin or penicillin generation of antibiotics. If it is a class II incision, such as gastrointestinal surgery or hepatobiliary surgery, the prophylactic antibiotic choice is a second generation cephalosporin antibiotic because of the possibility of infection, which includes not only gram-positive cocci but also gram-negative bacilli. Therefore, the prophylactic application of antibiotics for surgical procedures is mainly based on the different types of incisions.
