Can Breast Milk Jaundice Damage the Brain

Maternal jaundice with mild symptoms usually does not harm the brain, but more severe breastfeeding jaundice may lead to bilirubin encephalopathy.
1. Maternal jaundice: Babies who are breastfed for 4~7 days after birth may develop maternal jaundice, which is usually mild, without anemia or hemolytic manifestations, and will not harm the brain. Babies are generally in good condition, and may get better after stopping breastfeeding or symptomatic treatments such as phototherapy.
2. Bilirubin encephalopathy: more serious and untreated breastfeeding jaundice may develop bilirubin encephalopathy, with clinical manifestations such as convulsions, fever and other disorders of the central nervous system.
Babies with breast milk jaundice need to seek prompt medical attention and timely treatment to avoid delaying the condition.
