Breast cancer surgery can be devastating to patients not only on a physical level, but also on a psychological and social level. With the continuous advances in medical technology, plastic surgeons are now able to surgically reshape a breast (pair) to compensate for the patient’s deficiencies and allow her to return to her normal life and work. Breast reconstruction involves restoring the hemispherical structure of the breast, adjusting the symmetry of the bilateral breast, and reconstructing the nipple areola. Generally speaking, there is no age limit for breast reconstruction, and all patients can undergo breast reconstruction as long as their health condition allows. Tumor removal and breast reconstruction surgery can be performed simultaneously and in one visit, called immediate breast reconstruction. After the surgeon has removed the tumor, a period of observation or completion of adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy is required before the breast reconstruction surgery is completed by the mammoplasty surgeon, which is called delayed breast reconstruction. What are the methods of breast reconstruction surgery? What are the characteristics of each? Depending on the materials used, breast reconstruction methods can be divided into three types: a. Breast prosthesis reconstruction breast prosthesis reconstruction, that is, the use of silicone breast implants and expanders and other artificial materials to reconstruct the breast. The silicone breast implants used in breast reconstruction are the same as those used in breast augmentation surgery in terms of materials and results. If the local tissues and skin do not provide enough space to accommodate the desired size of implant after mastectomy, a skin expander can be placed and water can be injected into it periodically after surgery. This process is similar to a woman’s pregnancy in that as the fetus grows, the skin on the abdomen will increase as well. This process is similar to that of a woman’s pregnancy in that as the fetus grows, so does the skin of the abdomen. When the amount of space created and skin added is sufficient, the expander is replaced with a breast implant in another surgery. Autologous tissue breast reconstruction is the transplantation of skin, fat and muscle from the stomach, back, etc. to the breast area for breast reconstruction. We can look at some pictures of the different procedures to make it easier for women to understand. a) The abdominal tissue breast reconstruction plastic surgeon transplants skin and fat from the abdomen to the breasts to reconstruct the breasts, especially for women who have more meat on their belly, reconstructing the breasts and eliminating the belly fat at the same time, killing two birds with one stone. The incision scar on the tummy can be covered by underwear so it is not very visible. b) Buttock Breast Reconstruction Some women have fuller buttocks or less flesh on their stomachs, so they can use buttock tissue to reconstruct their breasts. The incision in the buttocks is also hidden in the underwear or bikini, so it is not very visible. Since no muscles are damaged, the motor function of the lower limbs and buttocks is well protected after surgery. c) Back tissue breast reconstruction For patients who do not have sufficient tissue in either the abdomen or the buttocks, the skin, fat and muscle (latissimus dorsi) of the back can be transferred to the chest to reconstruct the breast. The incision scar of the surgery can usually be covered by the cover of the bra and is not obvious. Third, the last method is breast reconstruction with autologous tissue combined with breast implants. This is usually when there is not enough volume of back tissue to reconstruct the breast in one phase in combination with a breast implant. What does the reconstructed breast look like? Does it have breastfeeding function? Breast reconstruction only reconstructs the tissue that has the shape and texture of the breast, but the breast tissue inside the real breast cannot be reconstructed and therefore does not have the function of breastfeeding. Thanks to the continuous efforts of plastic surgeons, modern breast reconstruction surgery is now able to achieve a level of fakeness. In particular, the difference between the two breasts is basically invisible when wearing a bra and clothes. In addition, after the implantation of the breast material, there will be a foreign body sensation and hardness to the touch at the beginning, which will gradually improve with time.
