CT is not ideal for identifying rib fractures because it is mainly a circular scan, and it is possible that the fracture plane may not be scanned or missed during the circular scan; CT is more effective for internal system diseases, such as pneumonia or bronchiectasis of the lungs. To identify rib fractures, a 3D CT of the ribs should be performed, because 3D CT of the ribs is a scanning and 360° reconstruction of the ribs, which can detect hidden fractures and exclude multiple fractures of multiple segments of the ribs.
