Treatment of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are most common in the lower extremities. There are different treatments depending on the severity of the condition. Mild varicose veins can be treated by observation. If the spider veins and reticular veins affect the appearance, sclerotherapy can be considered to close the varicose veins and, of course, elastic stockings can be worn to prevent further aggravation. Avoiding prolonged standing and sitting is the basic behavior to prevent further aggravation of varicose veins, which is much more effective than oral drugs to improve venous circulation. Treatment of moderate varicose veins: Compression therapy with compression stockings or elastic bandages can be used to keep the varicose veins in a shriveled state, the purpose of which is to reduce symptoms and prevent further aggravation of varicose veins. However, medical compression stockings are not suitable for all patients with varicose veins, for example, they are not suitable for people with skin infections and cardiac insufficiency. This method can only improve symptoms and is suitable for those who have mild symptoms and do not want to undergo surgery, whose general condition does not allow surgery or who have very poor tolerance for surgery. Treatment for patients with severe varicose veins: for those who seriously affect their work and life, high ligation of saphenous vein or small saphenous vein and stripping of varicose veins can be done, and sclerotherapy and compression therapy can also be used as an adjunct to surgery to deal with the residual varicose veins. Of course, a series of new surgical modalities, such as minimally invasive procedures like microwave, laser, radiofrequency and planar aspiration surgery, have been developed in recent years and can be applied optionally. The author’s innovative modified traditional saphenous vein high ligation and stripping surgery has a low recurrence rate and minimally invasive effect comparable to minimally invasive surgery.
