Eating organic foods linked to lower cancer risk

Study finds organic food reduces risk of blood and breast cancer. A large study conducted in France questioned the consumption of organic food by 69,000 people, who were then monitored for five years to see how many developed cancer. Organic food is grown without the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers or genetic modification techniques. Organic meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products come from animals that have no antibiotics or growth hormones. Researchers found that those who ate the most organic food had a 24 percent lower risk of cancer compared to those who ate the least organic food, but the study did not prove that eating organic food protects you from cancer because it did not prove that organic food was a direct cause of the reduced risk. In general, people who eat organic foods lead healthier lifestyles, exercising more and eating more fruits and vegetables than others, and although researchers have tried to adjust for such health and lifestyle factors, they may still have an impact. Therefore, it is best to focus on a balanced diet with more fruits and vegetables, less processed meats, a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight, along with regular exercise, can greatly reduce the risk of cancer. The study was published in the peer-reviewed medical journal JAMAInternalMedicine. Organic food consumption was more prevalent among: women, people with higher education or careers, and people who were more physically active and had a healthier diet overall. Cancers that are significantly associated with low organic food intake, such as postmenopausal breast cancer, lymphoma, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Thus, the more frequently organic foods are consumed, the lower the risk of cancer. Although the results of the study have yet to be confirmed, promoting the consumption of organic foods in the general population may be a promising cancer prevention strategy. But for now, as far as cancer prevention is concerned, it is usually more effective to eat a healthy balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, fiber-based foods, always eat fresh meat and no processed meat, and to engage in regular physical activity and maintain a healthy weight.
