Disadvantages of carotid endarterectomy

Carotid endarterectomy is now relatively well-established and has no particular drawbacks. However, it may cause nerve damage, blood pressure fluctuation, cerebral perfusion damage and thrombosis.
1. Nerve damage: carotid endarterectomy can easily cause nerve damage leading to choking on water or hoarseness.
2. Blood pressure fluctuation: due to the stimulation of the carotid sinus during the operation, high blood pressure may occur after the operation, and some patients may have low blood pressure.
3. Cerebral perfusion damage: the carotid artery stenosis can be effectively relieved by this surgery, and the cerebral perfusion will be significantly improved, so intracranial hyperperfusion and other manifestations may occur.
4. Thrombosis: The procedure is invasive, and there is a risk of thrombosis at the location of the incision.
Carotid endarterectomy needs to be carried out by professionals. Patients are advised to choose regular hospitals for this type of surgery, which needs to be carried out after perfecting relevant examinations and comprehensive assessment by doctors.
