Benefits of Knee Fusion Surgery

Knee fusion surgery is mainly used to relieve knee pain, deformity, and limitation of movement caused by severe osteoarthritis, infectious arthritis, and traumatic arthritis, etc. It can relieve knee pain and correct deformity. Knee fusion is a procedure in which all the articular cartilage of the lower end of the femur and the upper end of the tibia is cleaned out completely, and then the bones of the two ends of the joint are fixed together using internal or external fixation, and finally the two bones are bony fused. This is a destructive surgery, and after the fusion, the knee joint becomes a dead joint and does not hurt when you move around. However, the knee joint is usually fused to a slightly flexed position, which will severely limit movement. Due to the complexity of the surgery, specialized orthopedic treatment is required and it takes at least 3 to 4 months for the joint to be fully fused after the surgery. If knee fusion surgery is required, it is advisable to decide whether to take the surgery or not based on your own condition and your doctor’s advice.
