What does the nine-valent cervical cancer vaccine mean

The nine-valent cervical cancer vaccine is a vaccine that targets human papillomavirus types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58.
The human papillomavirus, or HPV, has been linked to the development of a variety of diseases, including cervical, vaginal, vulvar, oropharyngeal, anal, and genital and non-genital warts. Vaccines have been developed to prevent HPV infection and to prevent the development of subsequent HPV-related diseases.
The following three HPV vaccines are now commonly used in clinical practice: (1) HPV bivalent vaccine against HPV types 16 and 18; (2) HPV quadrivalent vaccine against HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18; and (3) HPV nine-valent vaccine against HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58.
The nine-valent HPV vaccine can be used to prevent cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, oropharynx, and other head and neck regions, as well as genital warts in women; it can also be used to prevent cancers of the anus, oropharynx, and other head and neck regions, cancers of the anal region, and genital warts in men. However, the HPV 9-valent vaccine is a prophylactic vaccine and is not effective against HPV that is already infected.
