Adenoid facies can present as deep overjet, but deep overjet does not equal adenoid facies.
Adenoid facies is caused by adenoid hypertrophy. Adenoid hypertrophy blocks the nasopharyngeal cavity, which will lead to prolonged open-mouth breathing, affecting the development of facial bones, resulting in a long maxilla, high arched palate, as well as misaligned teeth, protruding upper incisors, and lack of expression, i.e., an adenoidal facade.
Deep overjet is defined as the upper front teeth covering 1/3 of the length of the crowns of the lower front teeth, or the lower front teeth occluding more than 1/3 of the lingual side of the upper front teeth.
Deep overjet can be a manifestation of maxillary dysplasia as well as malocclusion in adenoid facies. There are other manifestations of adenoid facies such as posterior lip, lack of expression, etc. Also, deep overjet can be caused by mandibular dysplasia, caries of milk molar, etc., and the two are not equivalent.
It is recommended that patients consult a doctor to clarify the cause of the disease and then follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
