Soak the herbal tablets of Fangji Huangqi Tang in appropriate amount of water for 30 to 60 minutes. The first decoction is boiled on high heat, then turn off the low heat and continue to simmer for 30 minutes, then strain out the medicinal juice. The second decoction is added with hot water a little above the surface of the medicine, continue to cook over high heat until boiling, then turn on the low heat and cook for 15~20 minutes before straining out the juice and mixing it with the first decoction, and take it warmly in segments.
Fenghi Huangqi Tang is composed of the Chinese herbs Atractylodes macrocephala, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Fenghi, Astragalus membranaceus, Ginger and Jujubes, which have the efficacy of strengthening the spleen and inducing diuresis, benefiting the qi and dispelling the wind. Clinically, it can be used for treating rheumatism or wind-water (sudden oedema on the head, face and limbs) caused by deficiency of the epidermis, which can be manifested by symptoms such as heaviness or swelling of the body, sweating and malignant wind, pain of the limbs, and urinary dysuria (irregular urine).
In this formula, Fang Ji dispels wind and prevents dampness, Astragalus benefits qi and promotes diuresis, together as the principal medicine, Atractylodes macrocephala strengthens the spleen and dispels dampness, as the ministerial medicine, ginger and jujube are added to regulate Ying and Wei (to make the body’s internal and external qi smooth, each in its own way), and licorice benefits qi and is used as the adjuvant medicine. Take care to keep warm during the period of taking the medicine to facilitate sweating.
