In early summer, the temperature rises day by day, and as the hottest time of the year is approaching soon, many patients coming to the clinic say that although it is clear that it is a hernia, many of them say that it is going to be hot and they want to wait until autumn when it is cooler before they have hernia surgery. So is summer really not the right time to open a hernia? I don’t think so. The most common reason why patients are reluctant to have surgery is that “it is hot and the wound will not grow well because of sweating”. In fact, this is an old concept. In the past, when the conditions were poor, there was no air conditioning in the ward or at home, so it was really hot and sweaty, but now that the conditions are better, this problem no longer exists. Furthermore, from the metabolic point of view, people’s metabolism is the most vigorous in summer and wound healing is actually the fastest. In addition, in most cases, hernia surgery, especially inguinal hernia surgery, is a minor surgery with a wound of only four to five centimeters, so the probability of infection is very low, and nowadays there are more and more laparoscopic surgeries, so infection is even rarer with only three small holes in total. The second reason for not wanting to operate is that “I can’t take a shower for ten days or so after the surgery, and I can’t stand not washing in summer”. This is not a problem in my opinion. Now there is a lot of medical adhesive in the hospital to glue and protect the wound, so you don’t even need to change the gauze after surgery, and you can take a bath the day after surgery, so bathing is not a problem. The third reason for not wanting to operate is that “it’s not convenient for family members to come and take care of you in the heat, and it’s too tiring to go back and forth”. After all, most of the patients are ordinary people, and not everyone has a private car, except for the distance from the door to the car, which is air-conditioned. But now we are using tension-free repair technology, the whole hospitalization is only three to five days, the patient’s post-operative recovery is very fast, except for elderly patients, six hours after the anesthesia can get out of bed, two or three days after the operation, there are experienced nursing staff in the ward, no need for family members to stay with the night to take care of, it is just a few times to come to see the road a little hard thing. After listening to the above, do you think there is any reason? The hospital’s surgical ward is relatively empty in summer, and the time for outpatient surgery appointments is relatively short compared to the peak season in spring and autumn.
