Allergic rhinitis is an inflammation and dysfunction of the nasal mucosa caused by IgE-mediated exposure to airborne allergens. The four main symptoms are itchy nose, runny nose, sneezing and nasal congestion. Most of the children have allergic asthma, and some have allergic conjunctivitis and dermatitis. The incidence of the disease is very high. So how should the disease be treated? There are so many reports in the literature and journals at home and abroad that it is confusing for patients to know what to do. It is necessary to spread some general knowledge about it, and I will summarize a few of them for those who are interested. One is that with the symptoms mentioned above, it is important to distinguish whether it is allergic rhinitis or not. Cold, vasomotor rhinitis, eosinophilic rhinitis, etc. are all similar. You cannot say for sure that it is allergic rhinitis as soon as the above-mentioned conditions appear. The easiest way is to do a skin allergy screening prick test, which is not painful, not very expensive, and relatively safe and reliable. Secondly, regarding the cause of the disease, most experts believe that it is caused by two major factors: genes and environment, which means that genes determine the potential allergenicity of a substance to which you are allergic, and the environment you live in during a certain period of time has just that substance. The third is where the treatment should start. The easiest one to understand is to start with yourself and the environment according to the above mentioned etiology. You cannot change your genes, but you can desensitize yourself, and avoiding the environment with allergens are the two most basic ways to treat the disease. Fourth, the environment is often unchangeable because of work and life factors, and desensitization treatment is relatively individual and time-consuming, so education (to understand the relevant knowledge) and medication (especially topical stimulants, etc.) are included in the conventional treatment internationally. In fact, because each person’s situation is different, such as simple allergic rhinitis, some have sinusitis, some have deviated nasal septum, etc., so domestic surgery (including laser, radiofrequency, freezing, plasma, high-frequency electricity, ultrasound, etc.), traditional Chinese medicine (including Mongolian medicine, Tibetan medicine), physical therapy, psychological and special medical treatment, etc. are also the means of choice.
