High HDL may have a physiological cause or a pathological cause. HDL moves cholesterol to the liver and out of the body. A mild increase in HDL is a protective effect on the cardiovascular system, and when HDL is very high, it may be due to abnormal liver lipid metabolism. Individuals with high HDL levels are at less risk of developing coronary heart disease and should be analyzed and treated on a case-by-case basis. A slightly high level is good for the body, lowering bad cholesterol, which can be very beneficial, but if the elevation is abnormally high, the primary disease needs to be actively sought and treated aggressively, often seen in liver disease.
