Why does it hurt to breathe when you’re hit in the chest?

Chest pain on impact with gasping for breath may be caused by chest soft tissue injury, rib fracture, lung contusion and other reasons. 1. Chest soft tissue injury: after the chest is impacted, the local soft tissue will be damaged, resulting in pain in the chest. When you take a deep breath, the process of thoracic diastole and contraction will cause stimulation to the soft tissue injury area, resulting in pain in the affected area. 2. Rib fracture: when the chest is impacted, the bones are stimulated by external force, which may lead to rib fracture, causing pain in the affected area, accompanied by symptoms of respiratory restriction. Pain may occur when the patient gasps, coughs, breathes deeply, or turns his/her body. 3. Lung contusion: Impact on the chest may result in a reduction of chest volume and an increase in intrathoracic pressure, which may compress the lungs and cause lung contusion. As a result, the patient may suffer from hemorrhage and edema of the lung parenchyma, inducing symptoms such as painful wheezing, chest pain, chest tightness, shortness of breath, cough and bloody sputum. Patients with chest pain are advised to go to the hospital and follow the doctor’s instructions for relevant examinations to clarify the cause of the disease.
