How to treat hyperthyroidism with iodine

Treatment of hyperthyroidism with iodine must begin with stopping the intake of foods high in iodine and iodine-containing drugs such as amiodarone, followed by observation. About half of the patients can be cured after stopping iodine intake. If symptoms do not resolve, anti-thyroid medication may be added or beta-blockers alone may be used to control symptoms. Anti-thyroid medications include propylthiouracil and methimazole in the same dosage as general hyperthyroidism, and for a shorter period of time than general hyperthyroidism. Patients with iodine hyperthyroidism should not be treated with radioactive iodine 131. Iodine hyperthyroidism generally has a good prognosis and does not recur after stopping the medication.
