Chinese medicine’s “helping the righteous” and “eliminating the evil”

The terms “helping the righteous” and “eliminating the evil” are commonly used in Chinese medicine, and refer to two different methods adopted by Chinese medicine practitioners in treatment. “Zheng” refers to the positive energy, which is a general term for the body’s functions, but usually refers to the body’s ability to resist disease, as opposed to disease and evil. The term “evil”, also known as evil qi, is the opposite of the body’s positive qi and refers to various disease-causing factors and their pathological damage. The occurrence and development of disease can be said to be determined in a certain sense by the strength of both the positive and the evil. The relationship between good and evil is fully illustrated by the statement in the Su Wen that “when the righteousness exists within, the evil cannot dry up” and “where the evil comes together, its energy must be weak”. If the evil prevails, the disease will advance, while if the positive prevails, the disease will retreat. Therefore, the fundamental purpose of treatment is to change the contrast between the forces of good and evil, so that the evil will be removed and the good will be restored, in a direction conducive to the healing of the disease. To support the righteousness, i.e., using drugs or other therapies (such as acupuncture, massage, etc.) to support the righteousness, together with appropriate nutrition and functional exercise, to strengthen the body and improve the body’s ability to resist disease and natural repair, in order to achieve the purpose of eliminating disease and evil and restoring health. It is applicable to the disease evidence of positive deficiency and evil is not predominant. According to the specific conditions of the patient, the clinical practice can apply the tonic methods of benefiting Qi, nourishing Blood, nourishing Yin and helping Yang respectively. Exorcism is the use of drugs that attack and expel evil qi, or other therapies such as acupuncture, moxibustion, massage, surgery, etc., to get rid of the evil, so as to achieve the purpose of removing the evil and restoring the righteousness. It is applicable to the evidence of disease where the evil Qi is in full bloom and the righteous Qi is not yet decayed, and the main contradiction is the actual evil Qi. According to the different conditions of the actual evil, the clinical treatment methods such as sweating, attacking, dispelling, eliminating stasis, surging and vomiting, dispelling dampness and dispelling wind can be applied respectively. The combination of supporting the righteousness and dispelling the evil refers to the treatment of diseases in which the righteousness is already deficient and the evil is abundant. At this time, purely attacking the evil will hurt the righteousness; purely helping the righteousness, it is afraid to keep the evil. Therefore, it is necessary to support the righteousness and dispel the evil at the same time, according to the specific clinical condition, or to dispel the evil as the main, to support the righteousness as a supplement; or to support the righteousness as the main, to dispel the evil as a supplement; or first support the righteousness, then dispel the evil; or first dispel the evil, then support the righteousness, flexible use. In the clinical application of the law of supporting the positive and dispelling the evil, we must carefully observe and analyze the mutual growth and decline of the two sides. According to the position of the positive and the evil in the contradictory struggle, so as to decide the priority of supporting the positive and eliminating the evil. At the same time, when applying the principles of supporting the positive and eliminating the evil, we should also pay attention to the fact that supporting the positive must prevent the retention of evil; eliminating evil should not hurt the positive. Therefore, while eliminating the evil, the patient’s deficiency of positive energy must be taken into consideration. Likewise, when helping the positive, the strength and weakness of the evil must also be considered. In this way, we can achieve the purpose of helping the righteous without leaving the evil and eliminating the evil without hurting the righteous.
