Is surgery necessary for an unclosed foramen ovale?

Surgery is not always necessary for patent foramen ovale. Depending on the condition, clinical observation, medication, surgery and other measures can be taken to intervene.
1. Clinical observation: mainly applicable to cases with no cardiopulmonary function abnormalities and no organic damage to the heart, which are more common and usually do not require drug or surgical interventions, only clinical observation and regular cardiac ultrasound and other follow-up examinations can be carried out.
2.Drug treatment
(1) Antiplatelet therapy: including the use of aspirin, clopidogrel and other drugs, mainly used for the treatment of high risk of stroke and other diseases on the basis of patent foramen ovale.
(2) Anti-coagulation therapy: This includes the use of drugs such as warfarin, and is mainly used for the treatment of people with recurrent strokes, people with venous thrombosis in the lower extremities, and people whose blood is in a state of high coagulation.
3. Surgery: If the foramen ovale is not closed and there is cerebral hemorrhage, intractable headache, upright hypoxemia, etc., or if cardiac examination suggests that there is a moderate or large amount of abnormal blood shunt, surgery may be needed to seal the defect.
Seek prompt medical attention for the presence of an unclosed foramen ovale; the above medications need to be used under the supervision of a clinician.
