Children with separation anxiety should be aware of the differential diagnosis with the following disorders

Separation anxiety in children occurs before the age of six years and refers to excessive anxiety when a child is separated from an attachment figure; excessive worry that the primary attachment figure may be harmed or that they will never return; fear of being separated from the primary attachment figure; reluctance or refusal to go to kindergarten or school because of fear of being separated (not because of the kindergarten or school); unwillingness or refusal to go to bed without the primary attachment figure; a persistent and inappropriate fear of being alone, fear of staying at home without the attachment figure; recurrent nightmares related to the separation; excessive and recurrent distress, which may be characterized by crying, tantrums, distress, indifference, or withdrawal, immediately upon anticipation of separation from the attachment figure; and recurrent post-separation somatic symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, headache, stomachache, and malaise, in some children. Predisposing factors for separationanxiety include mandatory separation, such as the death of a parent, illness, or parental separation. These factors predispose children who have genetic qualities to anxiety. Note the differential diagnosis with the following disorders: 1, generalized anxiety disorder Children with this disorder have a wide range of anxiety, mainly about their own ability, appearance and what they do excessive worry, while the separation anxiety disorder is mainly due to the separation of anxiety. 2, obsessive-compulsive disorder children with this disorder can also have anxiety when leaving home, but this is often a special kind of obsessive-compulsive or ritual-like symptoms. These children are therefore reluctant to leave home. In addition, children with obsessive-compulsive disorder also have anxiety about the safety of their parents, but this idea is irrational, even if the parents can not be relieved in front of the eyes, and the child will also be afraid of their own aggressive impulsive behavior towards their parents. 3, school phobia children have accidental trauma in school, resulting in fear of the school environment and refused to go to school, which is different from the young child separation anxiety and refused to go to school, the latter is due to fear of separation.
