Perioperative results of two prospective, multicenter studies of patients with surgically high-risk carotid stenosis treated with carotid stenting, organized by a consortium of 280 hospitals and 672 operators in the United States, were published: 2145 patients from the Emboshield and Xact Post Approval Carotid Stent Trial (EX) and 4175 patients from the Carotid ACCULINK/ACCUNET Post Approval Trial. The overall mortality and stroke rates within 30 days after surgery in both groups were 5.3% for those with symptoms and 2.9% for those without symptoms. The rate was 2.9% for symptomatic and 2.9% for asymptomatic patients. For patients aged 80 years, the overall mortality and stroke rates were 10.5% for symptomatic patients and 4.4% for asymptomatic patients.
