Difference between Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan and Zuo Gui Wan

The main differences between Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan and Zuo Gui Wan are composition, efficacy and main treatment.
1. Difference in composition and efficacy: Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan is composed of Zhi Mu, Shu Di Huang, Poria, Chinese yam, Huang Bai, etc., which has the function of nourishing yin and lowering fire. Zuo Gui Wan is composed of Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Rhizoma Dioscoreae, Fructus Lycii, Semen Cuscutae, Fructus Cuscutae, Fructus Cortex and so on, which has the function of nourishing the kidney and tonifying Yin.
2. Difference in treatment: Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan treats dry mouth, sore throat, hot flashes and night sweating (abnormal sweating after going to sleep and stopping after waking up), tinnitus, spermatorrhea, and astringent pain in urination caused by deficiency of yin and fire. Zuo Gui Wan treats night sweating due to deficiency of true yin, lumbar soreness and weakness of knees, thirst, and lassitude (mental exhaustion and physical weakness).
Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan should be used with caution in cases of qi deficiency and fever, actual fever, colds, spleen deficiency, loose stools (thin and unformed feces), and qi stagnation and fullness in the middle of the body; it is forbidden for children and contraindicated for pregnant women to take Zuo Gui Wan.
