There is no harm to the body to perform EMG. EMG is not an invasive operation, but is done by stimulating the body surface to determine whether the patient has damage to the peripheral nerves. The EMG can clearly distinguish whether the problem is a muscle problem or a peripheral nerve problem. If the patient has diabetic peripheral neuropathy, or alcoholic peripheral neuropathy or peripheral neuritis, anterior horn gray matter of the spinal cord, or motor neuron disease, all can be clarified by EMG. Very few patients feel pain when having EMG done. Very few patients may have the area examined feel slightly numb or have a slight tingling sensation when having the test done, but it will not cause any harm to the patient’s body.
