Spleen deficiency in children mainly manifests as mental fatigue (mental exhaustion, physical weakness), pallor, lethargy, dullness, loose stools, etc., which are differentiated by qi, yin and yang deficiencies. 1. Spleen qi deficiency: manifested by fatigue, tiredness, low voice, timidness, colorlessness, dullness (lack of appetite, reduced food intake), loose stools (thin and unformed stools), distension and discomfort in the epigastrium (abdomen), pale red tongue, thin white moss, and weak pulse. 2. Spleen-Yin deficiency: manifested as fatigue, hunger and lack of desire to eat, zygomatic redness (reddish color of cheeks and zygomatic bones), dryness of the throat, and heart-heat (warmth of the hearts of the hands and feet, and self-consciousness of the heart and chest heat). Symptoms of Spleen-Yin deficiency are also accompanied by hot flashes (a burst of fever), night sweats (abnormal sweating after going to sleep, but sweating stops after waking up), a red tongue with little fluid and moss, and a thin and countless pulse (a pulse that becomes narrower and thinner, and quicker in rate). 3. Spleen-Yang deficiency: cold pain in the stomach and abdomen (cold pain in the stomach and abdomen), warmth and pressure, diarrhea, pale red tongue, thin white moss, and a slow and weak pulse. If your child has symptoms of spleen deficiency, you should consult your clinician and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment after identifying the symptoms.
