Postnatal depression (post-natal depression) usually starts within 6 weeks after delivery and is characterized by tearfulness, sadness, emotional instability, guilt, anorexia, sleep disturbances, difficulty concentrating and remembering, fatigue, agitation, and inappropriate coping with the baby. Some women have a period of good health after delivery and then develop the symptoms, while others develop from postpartum dysphoria. Postpartum depression is a moderate degree of depression, and the incidence of postpartum depression is reported to be about 3.5% – 33.0% in foreign countries, and about 7.6% – 20.9% in China. Antidepressants are widely used in clinical practice, but their slow onset of action, side effects, and high price and poor patient compliance limit their clinical application. Acupuncture has the advantages of economy and rapid onset of action, and has shown its superiority in the treatment of many diseases. In my clinical practice, I applied acupuncture with psychotherapy to treat postpartum depression with good results. Postpartum depression belongs to the category of “depression” and “dullness” in Chinese medicine, which is caused by liver qi stagnation or heart and kidney deficiency. The classics: “heart for the five viscera and six bowels of the main, and the president of the soul, the unified will, so worry in the heart of the lungs should be, thought moved in the heart of the spleen should be, fear moved in the heart of the kidneys should be, so the five will only heart to make …… emotional injury, although each of the five organs belong to, but its cause, it is not from the heart and hair. “ Postpartum depression is mostly manifested as depressed mood, lack of interest, heart distress, mostly for the heart Qi deficiency, heart and soul loss of nourishment. Therefore, Nei Guan and Shen Men are used to benefit the heart qi and tonify the heart and mind. Difficult Jing – Twenty-eight Difficult: “The Governor’s Vessel starts from the lower pole of the Yu, and in the spine, up to the Fengfu, and enters the brain.” Not only does the Governor’s Vessel enter the brain directly, but also has a wide range of contacts with the Taiyin meridian, the Turk’s Yin meridian, the Punch and Ren meridian and the heart and kidneys and other organs in the meridians. Ancestral medicine also believes that “the brain is the house of the spirit”, which is consistent with the modern medical view that the brain is the place of human thinking activities. Postpartum depression is related to the disorder of spleen and kidney and the deficiency of blood and qi. Postpartum depression is associated with sleep disorders and reduced or delayed speech and movement, which are mostly related to the poor functioning of the meridians of the Directing Vessel. Acupuncture therapy can improve the symptoms of insomnia and depression caused by endocrine and nervous system dysregulation after delivery, and has the effect of regulating the body. Therefore, Baihui, Renzhong and Sishencong are chosen to regulate the meridian qi of the Directing Vessel. As the Governor’s Vessel supervises all the yang, Baihui has the function of awakening the brain and opening the orifices and invigorating the yang energy; Renzhong belongs to the Governor’s Vessel and has the function of opening and closing the orifices, awakening the vital energy and regulating the internal organs; Sishencong is a strange point outside the meridian and has the function of awakening and opening the orifices and educating the mind. Taichong is an infusion point of the Foot-Turkish Yin meridian, which has the effect of soothing the liver and relieving depression. Modern neurophysiological research has confirmed that acupuncture in Renzhong can directly excite the upward activation system, lifting the inhibitory state of brain cells and enhancing the vitality of the weakened brain. Acupuncture of Neiguan can improve heart function and increase cerebral blood oxygen supply. Acupuncture of Baihui can improve cerebral blood circulation and increase cerebral blood oxygen supply. Through the observation of clinical efficacy of several cases of postpartum depression patients, it was found that after acupuncture, adverse reactions were reduced and patients had better compliance. It can be seen that acupuncture can regulate the organism as a whole, not only treating depressive symptoms but also improving multi-system symptoms such as exercise, digestion and sleep. In conclusion, acupuncture with psychological treatment of postpartum depression can be widely used in clinical practice.
