Recruiting subjects for a group cognitive-behavioral therapy program for mild depression

Dear Sir/Madam: The Shanghai Mental Health Center, in collaboration with the Psychology Department of Zhongshan Hospital and the Counseling Center of East China Normal University, is conducting group cognitive behavioral therapy for people suffering from depression, with the aim of developing an economical and practical group psychotherapy program suitable for patients with mild depression to serve a wider population. Your risk and benefit will be maximized. Two hundred subjects will be recruited for this project, 100 of whom will be assigned to the group psychotherapy group and 100 to the pharmacotherapy group. All patients who agree to participate in the study will receive 2 free psychological evaluations. Patients will then be assigned by the evaluating physician to either the psychotherapy group or the medication group based on the principle of randomization. Patients in the psychotherapy group will receive 1.5 hours of psychotherapy once a week for a total of 12 sessions in a group (group) setting; patients in the medication group will receive antidepressant medication as needed. At the end of the 12 week period, patients who are not satisfied with their treatment may voluntarily switch to the psychotherapy group or the medication group. We will interview you at the start of treatment and at 4, 8, 12, 24 and 36 weeks after the start of treatment to find out how you are doing.
