The formula of Angelica Paeoniae Radix is composed of one catty of Paeoniae Radix, four taels of Atractylodes Macrocephala, half a catty of Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, three taels of Radix Angelicae Sinensis, four taels of Poria, and half a catty of Rhizoma Zedoaria.
Angelica and Paeonia lactiflora powder is a formula from “The Essentials of the Golden Chamber”, which was originally used for the treatment of abdominal pain caused by disorders of the liver and spleen in pregnant women. The main reason is that during pregnancy, blood gathers in the uterus to nourish the fetus, and the liver and blood are relatively insufficient. Liver dysregulation leads to qi stagnation and blood stasis, and thus abdominal pain.
In Angelica Paeoniae Radix, Paeonia lactiflora is used to nourish Blood and relieve pain (to relieve urgent pain symptoms), while Angelica sinensis helps Paeonia lactiflora to nourish Liver-Blood. Rhizoma Chuanxiong is a qi herb in Blood, which can nourish Blood, invigorate Blood and move Qi. Zedoary seeps away dampness, Atractylodes Macrocephala and Poria strengthens the spleen and induces dampness. The formula nourishes Blood and regulates the Liver, strengthens the Spleen and seeps dampness. When treating pregnancy, the dosage of Rhizoma Chuanxiong in this formula should be small.
