Foot bunion orthosis improves function and appearance

What are bunions and bunions? Bunion, commonly known as “bigfoot”, is mainly characterized by bunion and inversion of the first metatarsal. It can be followed by bunions, metastatic metatarsalgia in which the bunion rides above the second toe and below the heads of the second and third metatarsals, swelling and pain in the fifth metatarsal phalangeal joint, and collapse of the arch of the foot. There is a clear genetic predisposition, with more women than men. Conservative treatment includes wearing loose shoes, orthopedic pads, and oral anti-inflammatory and pain relieving medications, etc. When conservative treatment fails, surgery is required. There are various surgical procedures, including soft tissue release, chevron osteotomy of the first metatarsal, scarf osteotomy, lundloff osteotomy, Lapidus fusion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, akin osteotomy of the first phalanx, and weil osteotomy of 2-5 toes. The selection should be based on the patient’s deformity site, degree of deformity, age, and activity requirements.
