What to do if you fail the hearing screening in the left ear

It is not uncommon for a baby to fail a hearing screening in the left ear, but the chances of this happening are small. If the baby does not pass the screening several times, parents should be alert to the possibility of hearing problems and wait until the baby is 42 days old to take him/her to the hospital for binaural re-screening. If the baby does not pass the re-screening, he or she should be referred to a hearing disorder clinic designated by the provincial health department within 3 months of birth for otolaryngological examination, as well as acoustic conductance, otoacoustic emission, auditory brainstem evoked potential testing, behavioral audiometry and other related examinations, and medical imaging evaluation if necessary, for further diagnosis and treatment. To ensure the accuracy of the test results, parents should cooperate with the doctor to do the following before the hearing screening: 1. The best hearing test results are obtained when the baby is in a natural sleep state; if the baby is in an irritable or crying state, the test results will be affected. Therefore, before the hearing test, parents should try to feed the baby and put him/her to sleep. 2. Change the baby’s diaper so that he/she is comfortable and does not cry, and choose the right thickness for the baby, too thin will be easy to get cold, too thick will affect the operation of the test.
