Precautions after saphenous varicose vein surgery

  1. The above-knee part was removed after 2 days of compression bandage. The bandage and incision dressing of the part below the knee joint will be removed after another week. It is recommended that the medical elastic stockings be worn daily for 3-6 months after removal of the bandages and taken off at night when resting.  2.After surgery, the affected limb may have mild swelling, which is normal and can be relieved usually in 2-8 weeks. If the swelling is more serious, the affected limb can be elevated when sleeping to promote venous reflux.  3.Do not scrub the affected limb with towel within 1 week after bandage removal, and use clean towel to absorb dryness after bathing. Avoid strenuous exercise within 1-2 months after surgery according to the recovery situation.  4.After removal of the bandage, some patients’ skin can be seen as patchy ecchymosis, which is reflected by bleeding to the skin surface during surgery and can be absorbed after about 1-6 weeks. Small blisters appear on the skin of individual patients, which can be healed after a few days.  5.After the surgery, the tortuous veins of the affected leg become hard, nodules under the skin, and palpable strips under the skin are the early changes after the surgery, which can gradually soften and disappear after 3-6 months.  6, individual patients may feel numbness in the calf or dorsal part of the foot after surgery, this is because the skin nerve is passed under the skin and is accompanied by the vein, and it is inevitable to lose part of the nerve when making incision and dealing with varicose vein, most patients can gradually recover in about 3-6 months. In the long term, it does not affect the function of the limb such as movement.  7.After 3-6 months, it is not necessary to wear medical elastic stockings for daily activities, but it is recommended to wear medical elastic stockings to protect the affected limbs when you need to stand for a long time to prevent the recurrence of varicose veins.  8.Aspirin should be taken orally for one month after discharge, once a day, one tablet each time. Auxiliary venous circulation drugs can be stopped after 1 month or so as prescribed by the doctor. If symptoms such as leg swelling and soreness appear again later, you can take it again for 2-3 weeks to promote venous reflux and relieve symptoms.  9.After discharge, if you find local redness, swelling, heat and pain of the affected limb or even fever, please go to Shanghai Oriental Hospital Vascular Surgery Department for follow-up consultation.  10.Patients with serious ulcers before surgery may need one to several months for the ulcers to heal gradually after surgery; skin pigmentation may take several years to fade gradually.
