What happens when elderly people choke on water

With the accelerated process of aging society, there are more and more elderly people in China, and the health problems of the elderly are getting more and more attention. According to statistics, the top four diseases causing death in urban areas are: malignant tumor, cerebrovascular disease, heart disease, and respiratory disease, in that order. Among them, the main cause of death for people over 65 years old is stroke. Swallowing dysfunction is one of the common complications in stroke patients, and choking on water is one of the most common manifestations of dysphagia and often an early manifestation of swallowing disorder. Choking on water is generally classified into two types: true bulbar palsy and pseudobulbar palsy. The difference between the two lies mainly in the different sites of brain damage. True ball palsy, also called ball palsy, is caused by damage to the swallowing center of the medulla oblongata, which serves to inhibit breathing during swallowing so that food can enter the esophagus normally and not accidentally enter the trachea. If the center is damaged, the pharyngeal muscles are completely paralyzed and the epiglottis cannot be closed, the main manifestation is that the food is swallowed by mistake, regardless of what food is eaten; while pseudobulbar palsy is due to bilateral damage to the cortical brainstem bundle, but because the nerve is not completely damaged, the swallowing reflex is still partially preserved, so the main manifestation is that the swallowing reflex is prolonged and the pharyngeal muscles, including the epiglottis, are impaired, so if you eat slowly or eat solids, you will not choke easily. Therefore, if you eat slowly or eat solid food, it is not easy to choke and cough, but liquid is easy to flow into the trachea uncontrollably due to the time difference and cause choking and coughing, most commonly choking on water. Chinese medicine believes that swallowing disorder is due to wind, phlegm and stasis blocking the meridians of the tongue and throat, making the flow of qi and blood is not smooth, and the tongue, throat and throat are not nourished. Normal elderly people are also prone to swallowing dysfunction due to degeneration of the mucous membrane and muscles of the throat, which mainly manifests as choking cough and difficulty in swallowing.
