What should I do if I have varicose veins in pregnancy?

Many of the young female patients who visit our clinic will say that they have varicose veins from their pregnancy. According to research, about 1/3 of pregnant women develop varicose veins or microvascular dilation in the lower extremities of varying degrees of severity. During pregnancy, varicose veins may appear not only in the legs but also in other parts of the body, such as the neck and perineum. This is due to the fact that during pregnancy the enlarged uterus compresses the abdominal organs and affects the venous return; on the other hand, the increased weight increases the burden of venous return in the lower extremities. Generally speaking, varicose veins in the lower extremities of pregnant women are simple and can be reduced after rest and sleep. If there is no reduction, and the edema gradually spreads to the calves, thighs, perineum, abdominal wall and even the whole body, and is accompanied by hypertension and proteinuria, the possibility of gestational toxicity should be considered and should be checked and treated as soon as possible to avoid negative consequences for the pregnant woman and the fetus. During pregnancy, the main thing is to avoid standing or sitting still for a long time, and at least every hour you should change your posture or walk back and forth to promote blood circulation in the lower limbs. Avoid wearing tight shoes and socks, and elevate the lower limbs at night to facilitate venous return. During pregnancy, you should do some gentle exercises every day, such as walking and soft gymnastics, to increase the elasticity of muscles and blood vessels and promote blood circulation. During pregnancy, due to the enlargement of the uterus, posterior tilt and increased intra-abdominal pressure, the abdominal vena cava can be compressed, so that the intra-venous pressure rises and impedes the venous return of the lower limbs. In addition, the increase of blood volume and the decrease of activity in the middle and late pregnancy make the vein wall thinner and easier to dilate, especially the changes in the superficial veins of the lower limbs. These unfavorable factors make women in pregnancy a good target for lower extremity varicose veins, and the prevalence is significantly higher than that of women without pregnancy. The lesions of varicose veins in the lower extremities during pregnancy are limited, with superficial varicose veins in the ankles and calves being the main ones, and the degree of varicose is mild. After delivery, the uterus recovers and intra-abdominal pressure decreases, varicose veins of lower limbs can be relieved or disappear to different degrees. The treatment of varicose veins in pregnancy does not require surgical treatment. The main thing is to increase the activity during pregnancy, avoid standing for too long, sitting for too long and moving too little, so as to improve the blood circulation of lower limbs and prevent and reduce varicose veins. Another important measure is to apply medical elastic stockings to artificially improve blood circulation in the lower extremities, so that the edema in the lower extremities can be reduced and the pain and discomfort caused by the varicose veins can be relieved and the varicose veins can be prevented from getting worse. The application of medical elastic stockings has some instructions: one is to choose the appropriate elastic stockings. The so-called “suitable”, that is, after wearing the ankle pressure is the most, the calf is the second, above the knee is the least, and does not affect the knee joint activities, sitting or squatting will not pleat, comfortable fit. If you feel the same pressure throughout the socks after putting on the elastic socks, they are not suitable and do more harm than good, not only do they not improve blood circulation, but also hinder blood flow. Secondly, the length of socks is chosen according to the lesion site. As the varicose veins in pregnancy are mostly limited to the calf and ankle, so the knee-length socks can be chosen to achieve the treatment purpose, and the longer leg-length elastic socks are used for those who involve the thigh veins. Thirdly, we should pay attention to the size of socks’ elasticity and pressure. In order to prevent varicose veins of lower limbs in the middle and late pregnancy, low-pressure elastic stockings (prevention type 18 mmHg) should be chosen, while medium-pressure (treatment type 20-30 mmHg) should be used for treatment, and high-pressure type elastic stockings should not be used. Pregnancy varicose vein prevention and control measures. Pregnant mothers work very hard and always have to be concerned about the health of their fetus and worry about their child. In fact, pregnant mothers need to pay more attention to their own health, only their health can ensure the health of the baby. So what are the protective measures for varicose veins during pregnancy? 1, often do lower limb varicose activity, can mediate the role of calf muscle pump, increase the flow rate of venous blood, promote the return of lower limb venous blood, reduce the lower limb venous pressure 2, sleep with pillow cushion legs, prompt venous blood return; avoid bathing with too cold or too hot water, the same water as body temperature is most appropriate; prevent constipation, such as chronic cough or shortness of breath should be completely cured, in order to reduce venous pressure. 3, the condition should buy the sequential decompression elastic stockings. This can reduce the venous pressure and prevent varicose veins. 4, should abandon the traditional postpartum “sitting moon” bad habits, early after the birth of the lower limbs out of bed, flexion and extension of the ankle joint, the method is: the toes do not move, lift the heel, so repeatedly exercise, can mobilize the role of calf muscle pump, accelerate the lower limb venous blood flow rate, conducive to the lower limb venous reflux 5, after the birth of continue to use elastic stockings, so that On the one hand, it can prevent varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis in the lower limbs, on the other hand, it can maintain the role of body shape.
