There are many causes of abdominal distension in the elderly. Consider gastrointestinal diseases such as gastritis, gastric ulcer, enteritis, and indigestion can cause abdominal distension. Constipation, ascites, and intra-abdominal masses can also cause abdominal distension. When abdominal distension is accompanied by symptoms, such as abdominal distension with belching, upper gastrointestinal diseases are more likely, such as gastric ulcer, gastritis, gastric prolapse, pyloric obstruction, chronic cholecystitis, etc. If abdominal distension is accompanied by frequent anal discharge, lower gastrointestinal tract diseases are more likely, such as constipation and colonic flatulence. Abdominal distension with vomiting may be due to upper GI obstruction conditions such as pyloric obstruction. Abdominal distension with total abdominal pain or indolent abdominal pain may be due to peritonitis or intestinal obstruction. In addition, functional dyspepsia and constipation are common causes in the elderly because of reduced exercise, slower metabolic activity, and weakened digestion, which can easily cause food and air to be retained in the stomach and intestines, resulting in abdominal distention and abdominal pain. This kind of bloating and abdominal pain has the characteristic that it can be reduced or disappeared after defecation or exhaustion. Repeated abdominal distension requires further consultation and examination at the hospital to find the cause of abdominal distension and to do further treatment.
