Post-operative out-of-hospital considerations for retinal detachment

Patients with retinal detachment often need surgical treatment to achieve retinal repositioning, and the recovery of vision after surgery is not only related to the severity of retinal detachment, the success of surgery and the basic condition of the patient’s body, but also the routine postoperative care is very important, especially after the patient leaves the hospital, due to the lack of professional nursing knowledge, which may lead to poor recovery of vision, or even the recurrence of retinal detachment and vision Further loss of vision. In view of the above problems, we will explain in detail the relevant precautions for patients after leaving the hospital, and hope that patients can pay attention to them. 1, first of all, the use of drugs, after leaving the hospital, patients and their families need to use their own ophthalmic drugs such as eye drops and eye ointment, which requires standardized operation, so that the drug is fully absorbed while avoiding unnecessary infections. Check for flocculants or foreign bodies in the drops before applying them. The operator uses the left thumb and index finger to hold the upper and lower eyelids open, and the right hand holds the eye drops 1-2 CM from the eye, putting 1-2 drops of eye drops into the lower dome, gently lifting the upper lid to fill the entire conjunctival sac with the drops, then wiping away the overflowing eye drops with a cotton ball and closing the eye gently for 1 minute. When applying eye ointment, as with eye drops, apply it to the conjunctival sac in the lower dome, gently close the eye, and then gently massage the eyelid with a cotton ball so that the ointment is evenly distributed throughout the conjunctival sac. Finally, wipe off any eye ointment that has spilled out of the eye. 2, Secondly, in terms of diet and living, the diet should be light and easy to digest, rich in fiber, eat more vegetables and fruits, avoid spicy and stimulating food, do not overeat, prohibit smoking and alcohol, keep the bowel movement smooth, develop the habit of regular bowel movement, avoid excessive force bowel movement. Do not splash dirty water into the eyes when bathing, washing hair or face within half a month after surgery, and protect the eyes and do not make strenuous head movements. If gas or silicone oil is inserted in the mesh removal surgery, you should rest in the prone position for at least 1 month after the surgery, no less than 10 hours a day as required by the doctor. For those who have been filled with gas, they should not travel by airplane or train for at least 1 month, or arrive at high altitude areas (low pressure will cause gas expansion and affect the prognosis); 3, proper exercise, regular life, do not overexert your eyes, remember not to rub your eyes, do not read books or watch TV for a long time. Work and rest time should be regular, avoid staying up late, can be appropriate, light exercise such as walking, limit strenuous exercise, avoid trauma. 4, keep a comfortable mood, which is a very important part of postoperative recovery, patients should avoid emotional excitement, and do not be frustrated because of vision loss, patients’ families should give patients spiritual understanding and care, to help patients rebuild confidence. 5, regular postoperative review, generally 1 week after surgery need to review to check the fundus and intraocular pressure, the doctor then according to the specific circumstances of the patient to formulate the next review time; postoperative patients feel eye discomfort such as flashing sensation in front of the eyes, or the emergence of fixed obscuration or black shadow in front of the eyes, should immediately go to the hospital dilated pupil examination fundus, in order to early detection of retinal lesion site and degree, timely treatment. 6, the treatment of systemic underlying diseases, systemic underlying diseases often affect the recovery of patients after surgery, such as diabetes, hypertension, etc. After surgery, patients should be closely monitored for blood glucose and blood pressure, and regular medication should be taken to control the patient’s blood glucose and blood pressure in the ideal range. For the diagnosis and treatment of a disease, accurate diagnosis before surgery, excellent skills of the surgeon during surgery, and long-term good care after surgery are needed. We hope that patients and their families can follow the above instructions of the doctor, do a good job of patient care after leaving the hospital, and work together with the doctor to escort the recovery of patients’ vision.
