Ganoderma lucidum, Poria cocos, and Maitong have the effect of calming the heart and tranquillizing the mind, benefiting the qi and strengthening the spleen when they are brewed and drunk. However, the active ingredient of drinking water is limited, and generally does not achieve the therapeutic effect.
Ganoderma lucidum is the dried seeds of the fungus Ganoderma lucidum of the family Polyporaceae, with the effect of tonifying qi and tranquilizing the mind, relieving cough and asthma. It is used for restlessness, insomnia and palpitation, cough and asthma in lung deficiency, and not thinking about food and drink.
Poria has the efficacy of inducing diuresis and seepage of dampness (promoting the flow of water to dispel dampness), strengthening the spleen and tranquilizing the heart, and is suitable for patients with edema and urinary deficiency, phlegm-drinking and vertigo-palpitations (vertigo and palpitations due to phlegm-drinking and evil qi upstream), spleen deficiency with low food intake, loose stools (thinning of feces without shape) and diarrhea, restlessness of heart and mind, palpitations and insomnia. It should be taken with caution for those who have a deficiency of yin without dampness or heat, or for those who have a deficiency of cold and slippery semen, or for those who have a deficiency of qi and subsidence.
Ophiopogon is the dried tuberous root of Liliaceae, which has the effect of nourishing yin and generating fluids, moistening the lung and clearing the heart. It is used in treating lung dryness and dry cough, paralysis of throat (redness, swelling and pain in the throat, or dryness, foreign body sensation, or itchy and discomfort in the throat, difficulty in swallowing), sore throat, thirst due to injury of fluids, thirst due to internal heat (fever accompanied by excessive eating, drinking and urination), heartburn and insomnia, and constipation due to dryness of the bowels.
