There is no authoritative information confirming that Jiao Liu Shen Qu can cause numbness of the mouth. Jiao Liu Shen Qu is made by heating and stir-frying Liu Shen Qu over a smokeless fire. Its medicinal properties are warm, sweet and pungent, which can strengthen the spleen and harmonize the stomach, eliminate food and regulate the middle. Compared with Liu Shen Qu, it is stronger in eliminating food stagnation (promoting food digestion), and is often used in cases of food stagnation (food that is poorly digested and stagnates in the stomach) that does not dissolve, distention and fullness of the epigastrium (abdomen), and disharmony between the spleen and the stomach. Since there is no authoritative data confirming that this drug causes numbness of the mouth, it is usually considered to have no such adverse effect. Jiao Liu Shen Qu is often combined with hawthorn and malt in clinical practice. These three herbs are effective in eliminating food, strengthening the spleen and stomach, and the combination of the three herbs is even more potent, which is effective in treating conditions such as decreased appetite and epigastric fullness caused by food accumulation.
