It selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis, and does not inhibit the physiological enzyme (cyclooxygenase-1) which has gastrointestinal protection, so its gastrointestinal adverse effects are much lower than other NSAIDs.
