Does it matter if your child has an exostotic rib?

Whether rib exostosis is important in children requires a comprehensive analysis based on the specific age at which it occurs, the severity of the condition, and whether it is accompanied by respiratory impairment, abnormal thoracic development, or scoliosis. For younger infants and children, bilateral rib exostosis is usually caused by rickets. It can usually be relieved with symptomatic treatment such as vitamin D and calcium supplementation. If adolescents have mild rib ectropion, it does not affect the overall appearance much and is not accompanied by breathing difficulties or scoliosis, so it can be observed and reviewed regularly, and the situation is not serious. However, in case of severe rib ectropion that compresses the internal organs and even restricts breathing, affects the shape of the thorax and leads to scoliosis, it is necessary to go to the hospital in time to take standardized treatment and, if necessary, to undergo surgical correction. Therefore, parents should take their children to the pediatric surgery department of a regular hospital in a timely manner after the development of rib ectropion, so as to clarify it through medical examination by a specialist and auxiliary chest orthopsies and other examinations, and to treat it accordingly.
