How to treat pericardial effusion

Pericardial effusion can be a stand-alone condition or a manifestation of other conditions. As a stand-alone condition, when the amount of pericardial effusion is large and produces a manifestation of cardiac compression, a pericardiocentesis should be performed to remove the symptoms of compression. Symptoms can be relieved by placing a drainage tube to drain the effusion. For patients with recurrent pericardial effusion whose etiology is difficult to eliminate, pericardial resection can be considered, or a thoracoscopic window can be considered to shunt the pericardial effusion into the chest cavity. However, if the pericardial effusion is a manifestation of other diseases, it needs to be treated according to the different primary causes. If the pericardial effusion is caused by a tumor, the most important treatment is radiotherapy and chemotherapy for the primary tumor; if it is caused by an infection, the most critical treatment is anti-inflammatory treatment, such as the use of antibiotics and anti-tuberculosis drugs, which may cure the primary disease and correct the pericardial effusion; if it is caused by low protein or heart failure, the main thing is to supplement protein, improve nutrition, and at the same time correct the symptoms of heart failure In case of low protein or heart failure, the most important thing is to supplement protein, improve nutrition, and correct the symptoms of heart failure. Therefore, depending on the cause of the pericardial effusion, the treatment method varies.
