Laser hair removal is done by emitting a certain wavelength of laser light through the laser device, which penetrates the skin to reach the location of the hair follicle and acts on the root of the hair follicle so that it absorbs energy and is damaged. The damaged hair follicle root will be atrophied and the hair will fall out and no new hair will grow. However, laser hair removal is only effective on melanin-rich hair in the anagen phase, and has little effect on hair in the regressive or resting phase. Laser hair removal does not normally cause side effects, but can have a small effect if care is not taken after the procedure. There may be slight redness and swelling, skin sensitivity and hot or itchy sensations in the area after hair removal, so if you feel pain, apply ice to relieve the pain. Due to the small amount of energy used in the photon treatment technique, side effects are rare. Slight redness of the treated area may occur, but such reactions usually disappear within a few hours. Laser hair removal is one of the less painful of all hair removal methods, with most patients feeling little more than a “rubber band” sensation. In addition to being less painful, it also has the advantage of quick results and low cost. It is important to note that laser hair removal can only stabilize the amount of hair regrowth in the treated area at a lower level than before for a longer period of time (about 3-5 years) after the procedure, but it does not completely eradicate it. Moreover, the degree and amount of hair reduction varies from person to person – some people can achieve satisfactory results very quickly, while others need more treatments than in regular cases.
