In general, the cost of a bone marrow aspiration ranges from about$300 -$800, but the exact cost may vary depending on the level of the hospital and the city in which it is performed and the tests performed. Bone marrow aspiration is essential for the diagnosis of most leukemias, and is performed by puncturing the posterior superior iliac spine of the pelvis, or the anterior superior iliac spine, to extract bone marrow fluid. In rare cases, a sternal puncture may be performed for morphologic examination of blood cells to assist in the diagnosis of the disease, to observe the effects of treatment, and to determine prognosis. It is indicated for various blood disorders, unexplained hematocrit or hypercellularity, and unexplained fever. There are few contraindications to bone marrow aspiration, except for severe hemophilia and some diseases with coagulation factor deficiency.
