Are egg yolks associated with high blood cholesterol?

Some people are afraid to eat eggs because of their high blood lipids, while others with normal blood lipids are cautious because of the cholesterol content of egg yolks, which can raise blood lipids, as advertised in some programs. How much cholesterol does an egg yolk contain? Today, I’d like to discuss egg yolks with you. A medium-sized egg yolk contains about 15 grams, and each gram contains about 1.51 grams of cholesterol, which means that a medium-sized egg yolk contains about 225 mg of cholesterol. The “Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents” recommend that the daily intake of dietary cholesterol should not exceed 300 mg; in the case of people with high blood lipids, the daily dietary intake should be limited to no more than 200 mg. In other words, people with high blood lipids will exceed the cholesterol intake limit by eating one egg per day, but it is still possible to eat an egg every other day. Of course, we also consume other cholesterol in our daily diet, such as animal offal, and the recommended intake of cholesterol here refers to the total daily intake. Therefore, it is acceptable for people with hyperlipidemia to eat 2-4 eggs per week with a balanced diet (more reasonable meal mix and avoiding fatty foods). For normal people, a reasonable intake of cholesterol (e.g., one egg per day) should be advocated because low cholesterol can affect our body functions. For example, the basic unit of our body is the cell, and cholesterol is a component of the cell membrane; cholesterol is also involved in the synthesis of hormones, and with less cholesterol intake, there will be less raw material for hormone synthesis, and endocrine function will be affected. It has even been found that the occurrence of depression, suicidal tendencies, tumors, etc. may also be related to low cholesterol intake. Therefore, as long as we follow the dietary principles of “not too salty, not too sweet, not too greasy” and “total control, structural adjustment and balanced intake”, moderate intake of cholesterol is beneficial to health.
