Monkeypox is not chickenpox. Monkeypox and chickenpox are both viral infections, both are contagious and both are self-limiting diseases. However, monkeypox is a disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which is in the same genus as smallpox virus. Chickenpox, on the other hand, is a disease caused by varicella-zoster virus infection, which is a type of herpes virus. Symptomatically, monkeypox often causes ulcerative lesions of the skin and mucous membranes, skin lesions, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, headache, muscle headache, and fatigue. Chickenpox, on the other hand, mainly presents with cutaneous symptoms, i.e., a centripetal distribution of red patches and papules that can progress to fluid-filled herpes within a few hours, and can also be accompanied by systemic symptoms such as fever and malaise.
