The principles of treatment in the acute phase of stroke are to improve blood circulation to the ischaemic areas of the brain and to promote neurological recovery as early as possible.
First responders at the scene should perform a brief assessment and necessary first aid treatment as soon as possible, which includes:
1. management of airway, respiratory and circulatory problems.
2.Cardiac monitoring.
3.Establishing intravenous access.
4.Oxygen administration.
5. Assess for hypoglycaemia.
Should avoid:
1. moving the patient at will.
2. giving sugary fluids to non-hypoglycaemic patients
3. Excessive lowering of blood pressure;
4. massive intravenous infusion of fluids.
