A fetal heartbeat of 160 beats per minute is normal. The fetal heartbeat can usually be heard at around 12 weeks of pregnancy and can be clearly monitored by a fetal heart monitor to determine the fetal well-being. The normal fetal heart rate is 120-160 beats per minute, and the average fetal heart rate is 162 beats per minute before the 20th week of pregnancy; while the average fetal heart rate becomes 147 beats per minute during the 21st-30th week of pregnancy; the average fetal heart rate decreases slightly to 138 beats per minute during the 31st-40th week of pregnancy. Usually, the fetal heart is heard most loudly on the upper back of the fetus, on the abdominal wall of the pregnant woman, so that the position of the fetal head can be determined and the location of the fetal heart can be determined. If the fetal heart rate is less than 120 beats/minute or more than 160 beats/minute and continues to be abnormal, further monitoring is needed to avoid fetal hypoxia in utero.
