Can laparoscopy be done for ovarian cancer?

There are no randomized prospective controlled studies of laparoscopic treatment of early-stage ovarian cancer. Retrospective studies have shown that laparoscopic staging surgery is similar in safety to open surgery and has the advantage of being minimally invasive and can be used for patients with early adnexal tumors. Possible drawbacks of laparoscopic surgery: microscopic lesions of lymph nodes and peritoneum are difficult to palpate and certain areas are not easily explored. It is safe and feasible for qualified institutions and physicians to select appropriate patients for laparoscopic surgery. There is also value in laparoscopic re-staging surgery. The feasibility of laparoscopic evaluation of patients with advanced disease for surgery is controversial. Laparoscopy can also be used for resection of certain recurrent ovarian cancer lesions. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic staging surgery for early-stage ovarian cancer should be feasible, preferably in a randomized prospective controlled study.
