What’s wrong with the vague pain in the liver area that is fine on ultrasound?

The hepatic area is an area in the upper right abdomen near the right rib cage. Pain in this area, but no problems on ultrasound, means the liver is still in good shape. It is not necessarily a problem with the liver, but is usually considered to be caused by lesions in other parts of the abdomen. There is a very important feature of abdominal pain – it is not clearly localized. That is, it is not a matter of which part of the body is in pain, which organ is in trouble. This is mainly due to the fact that the nerves that feel pain in the abdomen have a cross distribution. Pain in the liver area usually does not exclude problems in the gallbladder, stomach, or intestines. Part of the stomach is close to the liver, and when problems such as gastritis and gastric ulcer occur, there will also be vague pain and discomfort in the right upper abdomen near the liver area. This may be accompanied by symptoms of stomach disorders such as acid reflux and belching. Gastroscopy is preferable for the examination of these diseases. The gallbladder is close to the liver, and diseases such as cholecystitis and cholelithiasis can cause painful discomfort in the liver area. Ultrasound examinations can reveal inflammatory changes in the gallbladder and the presence of stones and other problems in the gallbladder. In addition, color ultrasound shows liver lesions with certain limitations, which can only be shown when the disease has progressed to a certain level. However, blood sampling for liver function is still more sensitive. Therefore, when the imaging examination does not reveal any problem, it is also necessary to cooperate with blood sampling for liver function in order to better determine whether liver problems have occurred. The characteristics of abdominal pain and the limitations of ultrasound determine that this test is not very good at detecting liver disease. It is better to perform a comprehensive examination based on the specific circumstances of the pain.
